Mountain Men

Mountain Men are skilled hunters and explorers. They hunted mainly for beavers because beaver skins were expensive. They went exploring to look for new and easier routes to take for traveling and trapping, or to find good beaver habitat.

John Colter,  Joseph Walker, and Jim Bridger were famous Mountain Men. John Colter was famous because he went on the “Corps of Discovery,” with Lewis and Clark. He also stated that his most exciting adventure was when Blackhead Indians captured him and killed his partner. Then, they stripped him down and chased him through the forest. As John turned,he turned his closest pursuer’s spear against them. After he killed his pursuer, he began quickly grabbing supplies including a blanket. He ran 200 miles to Fort Raymond dressed only in a blanket. Joseph Walker is famous because his group was the first  to explore the giant Sequoias in 1833. Only one person died in his group. Last, but not least, Jim Bridger stood out to me the most. Jim Bridger was called by Ashley Expedition when he was 18. He was traveling by the Missouri River and switched over to the Rocky Mountain Fur Company at age 18. He was a fur trapper for 45 years, and he discovered many new routes through the West. He survived an arrow wound to the back, married three Indian women, and found a trading fort on the Oregon Trail. Jim Bridger traveled from the Canadian Border to Southern Colorado. His group was one of the first to enter Yellowstone Territory. He was also the first Anglo-American to see The Great Salt Lake and falsely concluded it as part of the Pacific Ocean. Over the years he changed  into a trader and a wilderness guide. Jim Bridger helped pioneers pass  through Bridger Pass and Bridger Trail located in Wyoming and Montana. Later, he became an Army Scout, but he had to retire because he had failing eyesight and Arthritis. In 1881, he passed away in Missouri.

Mountain Men live a certain lifestyle that most people nowadays don’t choose. We are social beings and we need other people. Modern society offers safety and happiness with family. We have also adapted to living inside where it is warm. We  can easily go to a store for food and we have indoor plumbing which makes it more sanitary.  We have improved in many ways and have become more sophisticated than Mountain Men.  With beaver hats out of style there is no reason to be a Mountain Man. They stay out in the forest all day. They have to be strong, healthy, and brave because you have to fight Indians, animals, people, and weather.  . Mountain Men built small forts like the lean-to. They would find a ledge, and lean logs against it to protect them from animals, people, and harsh weather while they were sleeping. They also had to clean the skins. The Mountain Men would make a willow hoop to wash and dry the beaver skins. Usually they would have an Indian women, usually their wives to cook and clean the skins.

In the winter, the Mountain Men and sometimes Indians would use the method called “The Winter Hunt.” They would thump the banks until they heard a hollow sound. This is the burrow of the beaver dam. A burrow is a hole in the ground created by an animal for shelter. They cut the ice above the burrow with an ice picket, push a net into the hole, spreading it across the ground and the sides,  while holding strings above the water. Then, a Mountain Man would stab the top of the beaver dam with an ice picket. The Mountain Man would shout “ready,” and the Indian attendant would yank the strings up. If there was a beaver, he would throw it on the ice and hit it with a club. They would immediately put the net back in the water to be prepared for any more beavers.

To kill the beavers in the summer, they needed firearms and traps. The firearms that the Mountain Men used are the Flintlock Musket, The Scatter Gun, Pistols, and the Merriweather Lewis Airgun. The Flintlock Musket is for elk, deer, and birds. It has poor aim at 40 yards, but it can kill someone. It is about five feet long. They used it mainly for hunting and in a battle. The Scatter gun is a lightweight, singleball, fineshot gun. It is a British product. It is a favorite of French-Canadian boatmen. The Mountain men would use this gun if they were on a boat. The Mountain Men rarely used the pistols, because it was used for the military. Finally, the Merriweather Lewis Air gun. It was the most valuable item on Lewis and Clark's expeditions. It was used not to kill, but to stun someone or something that is out of hand. The Mountain Men did not use this one for hunting, they used it for expeditions.  A couple traps the Mountain Men used are the pen, the funnel, and the steel trap.  The pen is a cage placed in the water with a vertical sliding door.  It's dropped when a beaver swims in, or by a nearby Mountain Men. It is made of wood. It is a rectangle with an opening at the end and bait inside it.  This would trap or drown the beaver. The Funnel is placed at the door of the beaver dam with the small end downstream. The beaver would be curious and go to the funnel.  The head of the beaver goes in, but it can’t get out. This drowns the beaver. In 1884, Sargent and Company invented the steel traps in Connecticut. Steel traps are still commonly used today. Steel traps have a circle called the pan in the middle. When an animal steps on the pan the sharp jaws spring on the animals foot. When the animal puts pressure onto the pan, it puts pressure into the springs and causes it to snap up around the animal's foot. Not bouncy springs, but triangular springs with holes at the end to hold the jaws open or closed. The trap would have a chain on it and the chain would go around a tree, so that the animal can not get away when it is trapped. When Mountain Men were hunting they would run into Indians. If they ran into mean Indians they would either get captured and killed, chased for days or worse. If they ran into good Indians they would probably eat together and trade.

Beaver skins were six dollars back in the 1800’s. Nowadays, this is equal to 100to 200 dollars. Most Mountain Men trapped and traded because they wanted a fortune or an adventure. The Mountain Men would trade with the Indians, Europe, and trading companies. They traded alcohol, guns, and many more items for beaver skins. They would usually find the people who paid better. There are a lot of trading companies, some of them are the Hudson Bay Company, Rocky Mountain Fur Company, and the Pacific Fur Company. On May 2, 1670, the Hudson Bay Company was chartered and is one of the oldest companies in the world. It's located in Toronto, Canada. In March 2025, they filed for bankruptcy because they were not getting enough customers. The Hudson Bay Company was sold to Canadian Tire. In 1822, the Rocky Mountain Fur Company was organized by General William Henry Ashley, and Major Andrew Henry. They prospered for the next seven years. It is located in the Rocky Mountains. The Pacific Fur Company operated from 1810 to 1813. It was founded by John Jacob Astor. The company had to shut down because of the risk of being captured by the British during the war of 1812.

Mountain Men have shaped the West by their bravery and strength. They have fought in many battles, but they also made foes and friends on the way, but their  way of life had to change. We have found more efficient ways to get food, and we now have plumbing for water. Thanks to the Mountain Men, we have become more sophisticated.
